Stepping Beyond Rigid Automation: BOW Develops AI-Driven Robot Control within AI-MATTERS

Share:

BOW’s Experience:

Industrial robots are known for their precision and reliability. But as manufacturing systems become more flexible and dynamic, traditional rigid programming approaches are no longer enough. The next step in industrial automation requires robots that can adapt, respond, and operate with greater autonomy.

Within the AI-MATTERS framework, BOW – now evolving into OLO – partnered with ARENA2036 to develop and validate an AI-driven driver system for KUKA industrial robot arms. The goal: move from static automation toward intelligent, software-defined robotics.

The Challenge: Enhancing Robot Autonomy

Conventional industrial robots typically operate through predefined control architectures. While effective for repetitive tasks, these systems limit flexibility when production requirements change.

BOW identified an opportunity to enhance robot control by developing an AI-based driver system capable of extending the autonomy and adaptability of KUKA industrial robots. However, validating such advanced control concepts required more than simulation alone.

To bring the technology closer to industrial deployment, BOW needed:

  • Access to industrial-grade KUKA robot hardware
  • A realistic and safe production environment
  • Technical expertise to test AI-driven control under real operating conditions

This is where AI-MATTERS provided essential support.

Testing Intelligent Control in a Real Factory Environment

Through AI-MATTERS, BOW gained access to the ARENA2036 research factory – a flexible and reconfigurable shopfloor designed for experimentation with next-generation production technologies.

The collaboration enabled BOW to develop and validate its AI-driven driver system directly on industrial robot hardware. The project combined advanced AI algorithms with practical robot control architectures, ensuring that innovation remained grounded in industrial reality.

By testing within a controlled yet realistic manufacturing environment, BOW was able to experiment safely while maintaining the robustness required for industrial applications.

The Results: From Concept to Feasibility

The collaboration achieved several key milestones:

  • Successful development of an AI-driven driver system for KUKA industrial robots
  • Demonstration of enhanced flexibility and adaptability in robot operation
  • Validation of AI-based control concepts on real industrial hardware
  • Proof of feasibility for AI-enabled robotic autonomy in manufacturing environments

These results confirm that AI-driven control systems can complement and extend conventional industrial automation, paving the way for more intelligent robotic applications.

A Safer Path Toward AI Integration

One of the major insights from the project was the importance of structured experimentation when integrating AI into robot control systems. AI-MATTERS provided a safe and industrially realistic framework for testing advanced concepts without disrupting live production.

For BOW, this experience reinforced confidence in deploying AI-driven control solutions in future manufacturing applications – ensuring both innovation and reliability.

Looking Ahead: From BOW to OLO

Following its evolution from BOW to OLO, the collaboration with ARENA2036 continues within AI-MATTERS with an expanded technological scope.

OLO’s ROS2-integrated AI framework will be further developed and validated, focusing on:

  • Advanced industrial robotics
  • Cognitive robotic systems
  • Humanoid robotics applications

Through continued experimentation at ARENA2036, the partnership aims to develop modular, AI-driven robotic control frameworks that enable greater autonomy, interoperability, and scalability across future manufacturing systems.

By combining real-world validation with cutting-edge AI development, this collaboration demonstrates how AI-MATTERS supports Europe’s transition toward intelligent, adaptive, and software-defined manufacturing.
